July's Theme: POTPOURRI

today's group scanned a variety of different topics. we discussed emotions surrounding lapses in recovery and listening to inner voices who were not being listened to. we talked about instances where we were cocky in recovery and how that played out for us. we were also reminded through an india arie song that we don't have to be "your average girl in the video" and that we must allow ourselves to be confident that what "god gave me is just fine." the question was posed "am i ok with just being me in this moment?" and affirmed that yes, it is ok to be just where you are and love yourself inspite of it. we discussed fear, success, balance and faith regarding our recovery. we also lifted up moments where we had consciously done something for ourself and our own happiness in the recent week or two. we thoguht about ways we could support ourselves/ honor our own truths over the next few weeks as well. thanks to all who came and all who were mindful of our meeting! look for ya next month!!!

Next Alumni Support Group: Sunday, August 10th, 4:00pm- 5:30pm. Note the change to the second weekend of the month. This is only for August, and we will resume the first Sunday of the month in September. Thanks for your flexibility.

I can't find the button to put out a new post anymore so I'm commenting on this one. I want to thank all of you for the support I got around my dissertation and give you an update. The faculty are trying to stop me from getting a degree because I'm not finished with the dissertation. They told me that I couldn't have another year extension. The dissertation will be finished this week but I still need a one year internship. Without the extension I cannot complete the degree. Devastating is the only word that comes to mind. I plan to appeal and I asked them to go ahead and send me a termination letter but they are going to make me wait until the Fall when the faculty meet again. I can't appeal until I actually get the termination letter so I'm stuck. The only unstuck place is that I can finish my dissertation this week. My advisor told me he didn't see any reason for me to finish it if it is not going to lead to a degree. However, I want to finish it even if I never get the degree. I need the closure. Plus it shows them I am serious about the appeal if I go ahead and finish it now.

This has made me relapse and the other night I binged and purged 3 times. I've want to purge every meal since then but have been able to stop myself with some support from a friend. She struggled with alcohol addiction so she "gets it" but it would be nice to have someone who really understands. Would anyone be willing to be a sort of "buddy" to me for a little while? I need someone I can call when I get triggered (and I promise to only call during the day and no more than once a day). I can provide support in return.

I'm really struggling and I want to get over this. I don't want the faculty at my graduate school to win by my letting my eating disorder take over.

Thanks for reading.

I just realized that my post says that this "has made me relapse". Nothing MADE me relapse and no one has the power to do that. I need to remember that.

I'm here for you Kathy. I'm a junior at Ohio University, and can relate to your academic anxieties. I was also Tapestry resident #4. Due to the distance, I haven't been to any of the support groups, but I would love to offer you any help I can.
Just remember that you were placed on this earth for a purpose, and every challenge you face will only make you stronger. You can get through this difficult time, and things will work out. I'm glad you're not afraid to reach out and ask for help! That takes incredible courage!
